A bulky bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.

The successful bid for the 243kg fish was submitted by the company of a popular sushi chain, which operates locations throughout Japan and internationally.

"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the business owner, a notable participant at the annual first sale.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this industry figure is noted for placing record bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Past

Following the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "astonished at the final price," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."

This most recent purchase exceeds his previous notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to surpass his own record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Swift Service

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for diners at the winner's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one satisfied patron.
