Mount Mahameru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Emergency Relocations

Indonesia's Mount Semeru, the tallest summit on Java island, has exploded, covering several villages with volcanic ash, prompting evacuations and causing officials to elevate the warning to the maximum level.

The mountain in East Java province released searing clouds of fiery ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 4 miles down its sides several times from midday to dusk, while a dense plume of fiery clouds rose 2km into the air, according to Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that occurred throughout the day forced officials to raise the volcano’s alert level twice, from the third-highest level to the highest, the agency said. No deaths or injuries have been announced.

More than 300 residents in the three villages most at risk in the area of Lumajang region were evacuated to government shelters, according to a representative for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He said that heightened volcanic movements of the volcano on the afternoon of Wednesday prompted officials to widen the hazard area to 8km from the summit. People were urged to stay clear from an area along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the lava flow, as scorching gases moved down Semeru’s slopes.

Footage on online platforms showed a thick plume of volcanic dust moving through a wooded ravine to a river beneath a bridge. Locals, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and water, fled to makeshift refuges or left for other safe areas.

Local media reported that emergency teams were facing challenges to rescue about 178 people stranded on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The party included 137 climbers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an spokesperson with the national park.

“They remain secure at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” a spokesperson said in a video statement. He said the post was located 2.8 miles from the crater on the north side of the mountain, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was observed moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation forced the team to spend the night there, he explained.

Semeru, also called Mahameru, has burst many occasions in the past 200 years. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of residents continue to reside on its fertile slopes.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 people were killed and hundreds others were injured and settlements were buried in thick mud. The event forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents from their houses.

The country, an island chain of more than 280 million people, sits along the Pacific seismic belt, a curved series of fault lines, and is susceptible to seismic events and volcanic activity.
