Jude Bellingham Has to Drop the Petulance to Secure a Key Position With Manager Thomas Tuchel.
For Bellingham to wants to fight his way back into the English top team, he would be wise to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted when he saw that his number was about to come up after an evening of inconsistency in the match against Albania was unacceptable.
"I’d rather not overstate it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the players who enter the game," stated Tuchel. "Decisions are made and you need to comply as a player."
The midfielder must understand. It was unnecessary for a strop. The captain had just put the Three Lions leading by two in a dead rubber fixture, with only six minutes remaining and the player, following an inconsistent display, received a caution for bringing down an opponent. This could scarcely be called a questionable change. In fact it might have been reckless for the head coach to keep Bellingham on the pitch given that it was possible Bellingham would be suspended of the first match of the tournament by getting a another booking.
Shifting Focus on Himself
Yet Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. No one could overlook the player's annoyance upon understanding that he would be substituted for another player. He flung his arms in the air and although he shook Tuchel’s hand after making his way to the bench there was no doubt that Tuchel was not impressed.
This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He applauded Rashford for sending in the ball for the captain to nod home the team's second, but his other actions was self-defeating. It's not like complaining was going to change Tuchel’s mind. Tuchel has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the value of acting professionally.
In the Spotlight
He, left out of last month’s squad, has been under scrutiny upon his return to the squad recently. Practically his place has been in question and he hasn't helped his case with his response to being taken off as the national team rounded off a ideal group stage by seeing off a spirited effort from their opponents.
The System and the Setup
This implies opinions are divided on if England perform optimally with Bellingham in the team. The evidence here was inconclusive. Tuchel tried new things from the manager at the start. Under him, England have gained the squad structure and clarity lately, building with a holding player, a box-to-box player, a No 10 and out-and-out wingers, but the approach changed versus Albania. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, Adam Wharton was in the starting lineup at this level and the use of the defender as an auxiliary midfielder meant there was faint echo to Manchester City’s historic treble-winning side.
A Game of Two Halves
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate during the second half but at times seemed trying too hard. He made many poorly executed passes. A pointless clash against an opponent at the beginning. England were ragged after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents resulted from Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking came after he lost the ball from Broja and brought down Broja.
Squad Strength Shows
In the end England’s depth proved crucial. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who seemed more naturally fitted to the position in which Bellingham operated earlier in the match, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka delivered a corner for Kane to open the scoring. It highlighted that dead-ball situations will play a key role in the upcoming tournament.
Bridge Still Stands
Still, though, the focus was on Bellingham. The excellence of the winger's delivery for the second goal was somewhat overlooked amid the drama of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, the focus was on the midfielder. Tuchel came over behind him and directed the player towards the travelling England fans. The bond between them is not damaged. Tuchel hasn't decided to give up on him at this stage. Yet whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him centre stage is still uncertain.
