Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
