Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their development".
Summers, who previously led the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed communications revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the AI firm expressed it understood his determination to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This news comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on recently to pass a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will afterward proceed to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his position on the issue following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of financier-linked emails disclosed by the Congressional committee last week included multiple prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.
The messages showed that the economist and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to connect Summers to notable global figures.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to rebuild trust and mend connections with the persons nearest to me".
Professional History
The economist served in leadership roles under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He headed the institution from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be associated with the organization.
The former official joined the leadership of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO Sam Altman.
