Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unwanted presents could be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Sale
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. The diverse haul is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. A date is yet to be set, although the goal is to conduct the sale by year's end, with all funds raised going to various charities.
Storage Room Collection
These gifts are currently locked away in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been sitting unused over a long period.
The full gift list remains made public, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion raised if a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
Notable gifts feature:
- A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Political Context
Meloni has been credited, mainly from within her party, with building relationships with global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.
This unique auction highlights a novel approach to manage the state presents that are collected during a leader's tenure.
