At least 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Police Raid on Organized Crime

No less than 64 civilians were killed in a police operation against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's records.

Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. In excess of 80 people were arrested.

Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities said.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

State officials said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Locals have likened the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
