A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”

This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A Future Secured

This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.

“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”

Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
